On December 1, American troops attempted to destroy a bridge over the Rahway River connecting Piscataway and New Brunswick to slow the pursuit of the British and Hessian forces. While in New Brunswick, Washington used Cochrane's Tavern as his headquarters. American troops stopped in New Brunswick from November 29 - December 1, 1776, as part of their retreat across New Jersey from Fort Lee.The building has been moved to East Jersey Olde Towne in neighboring Piscataway.
